CA LA YLENIA
Single-family home refurbishment · Teià
Ca la Ylenia is a three-storey single-family house in Teià, with exposed brick façades and a garden with a pool facing the views. The refurbishment keeps the brick envelope, which gives the house its character, and transforms the interior with a clean, bright, contemporary language.
The ground floor was originally built on several levels. The refurbishment opens it up entirely and brings it to a single level, moving the height difference to the edge of the terrace, where it becomes the transition between terrace and garden. From the entrance to the terrace, kitchen, dining room and living room follow one another in a single continuous space, free of partitions, running through the house from façade to façade. The kitchen stretches along one side and is a social kitchen: the large island, open to the dining and living areas, means no one is pushed into the background and whoever is cooking remains part of family life. On the other side, a white bespoke unit wraps the staircase and gathers all the storage. The service areas, a guest toilet and a utility room, are grouped next to the entrance. A line of indirect light highlights the volume of the unit.
The first floor is given over to the bedrooms and bathrooms, the most private spaces of the house, while the third floor houses a playroom and a study area.
The relationship with the outdoors is at the heart of the project. Large sliding windows open the living room onto a new terrace that extends the interior towards the garden, and the steps that take up the change in level are clad in terracotta-toned ceramic that echoes the brick of the façade. The dining room window opens towards the sea and, from the kitchen, a horizontal window frames the view of the hills.
The design language is built on the choice of just three materials. White, on walls, ceilings and bespoke joinery, unifies the space and multiplies the light. Oak adds warmth at specific points: the kitchen fronts, the stair treads and the open niches of the storage unit. And continuous light-grey large-format flooring runs through the entire ground floor and out onto the terrace, blurring the line between inside and outside. In the bathrooms, every surface is finished in microcement, removing joints and unifying colours and textures. It is a calm palette that lets light and views take centre stage.
The result is an open, bright home, designed to live the ground floor and the garden as one space.
